Mitch,
Here's my experience with Michelin all season tires (advance warning to
Triumph purists - my comments revolve around my experiences with a VW
GTI, so you may not wish to read the rest of this post). Here goes...
I noticed you also own a GTI. So do I (87 8 valve). My LBC is a TR6 on
which I use Michelin X Redlines (summer use only). However I had to
replace tires on my GTI and bought Michelin XGT H4's thinking I would
save the hassle of switching from summer to winter tires. Well after I
got them on the GTI I noticed they were nowhere near as nice as the
Yokohama A008's they replaced. Ok I thought, when winter rolls around
I'll appreciate the traction of my new skins. Wrong! They were much
worse than my winter tires (Continental). I quickly traded them in for a
set of Michelin winter tires (this was in the early winter) when I
discovered that I couldn't climb a hill I was used to climbing in winter
- I was actually scared to drive with these tires in the winter. When
summer rolled around, I didn't want to go back to an allseason tire and
instead bought a set of Yokohama AVSi tires - sweet but not as sweet as
the A008 - these are no longer available.
So for those wondering why I am rambling on about tires for a VW in a
Triumph group, the moral is this: In my experience (albeit brief but I
think I got all the info I wanted out of it), I will never again
purchase all season tires for any vehicle I own.
Reasons?
1. I snowboard a lot in the winter and therefore I need more traction
than it appears all seasons provide.
2. In the summer, I sure do apprecaite the vastly superior handling
offered by a true summer tire.
3. Last, I guess I'm willing to pay for this (ie two sets of tires for a
year round car).
For your LBC, if you only drive when snow and ice are of no concern, get
a summer tire. I think you will be much happier.
