Mark, while you're right that the structure of the boot lid
didn't vary in the early cars, the method of locking them
did.  The 2's only had the budget locks (like the spare
tire compartment); I believe that the early 3's had the budget
locks and the central key lock, while 3A's only had the key lock.
Unfortunately, I can't answer the original question about where 
the changeover occurred, but it wouldn't surprise me that
S/T was using up leftover parts with the extra holes since
your car is apparently a very early 3A.  By the way, there's
another difference in the boot lids (and hoods) of the 
post-60,000 cars that Mark didn't mention - the hinge attachments
are different, so that the hinges aren't interchangeable with
the earlier cars.
