A brief follow-up:

Removal of the hub was not necessary. I was able to extract the stud 
from the spline and reuse the original stud. THen simply attached the 
new spindle. As good as new!

Thanks to all who provide information on the hub removal, I'm certainly 
glad it proved not to be necessary
