Did you see the drive shaft turning?
Drive shaft has to turn to make the transmission turn

Good tip on the retaining ring. I put the rear end on jack stands and =
rotated the rear wheels by hand with the car in gear. With the cable =
disconnected from the gauge, I expected to see the square cable spinning =
(albeit slowly) with the housing. Nothing. So I=E2=80=99m thinking the =
transmission end (cable/gear/ring) isn=E2=80=99t seated properly or the =
cable is broken. =20
=20
Any problems with this logic? =20
=20
Thanks again,

You only have to line up that bolt once. When you have it all apart, =
cut or grind a notch at the bottom of the retaining ring. Then you can =
first install the retaining ring, then insert the speedo cable, swing =
the retaining not-quite-ring over top, and tighten. If there is a next =
time, you don=E2=80=99t even have to take the bolt out. I did from below =
on my lift.

I replaced the gear on the my cable last year.
=20
You can get at the speedo cable at the transmission by taking the panel =
off the tunnel under the carpet, but it is not easy.
Getting the bolt lined up to go back into the transmission was the hard =
part, I managed it with some profanity.
=20
The bolt is easier to line up from underneath and possibly the whole job =
is easier from underneath.

Hey all =E2=80=93
=20
I recently had a local shop replace my clutch, along with a few other =
repairs/updates. On the drive home, I noticed the speedo =
wasn=E2=80=99t working. I mentioned it to the shop and they said it =
works =E2=80=9Cwhen it wants to=E2=80=9D but would be happy to take a =
look (meaning extra $). My overall impression of the shop=E2=80=99s =
work is just okay, so I was going to troubleshoot what I could before =
bringing the car back for more of their time. =20
=20
It=E2=80=99s been about 20 years since I installed that cable and could =
use a refresher. The installation at the gauge end is pretty =
straightforward, but as I recall the speedo gear end is more tricky. I =
seem to remember that there here was an access port on the transmission =
tunnel underneath the carpet and cubby box (?). Or is it easiest to =
raise the car and access from underneath? Some combination? =20
=20
Thanks much!
