You only have to line up that bolt once. When you have it all apart, cut o=
r grind a notch at the bottom of the retaining ring. Then you can first in=
stall the retaining ring, then insert the speedo cable, swing the retainin=
g not-quite-ring over top, and tighten. If there is a next time, you don't=
even have to take the bolt out. I did from below on my lift.

I replaced the gear on the my cable last year.
You can get at the speedo cable at the transmission by taking the panel off=
the tunnel under the carpet, but it is not easy.
Getting the bolt lined up to go back into the transmission was the hard par=
t, I managed it with some profanity.
The bolt is easier to line up from underneath and possibly the whole job is=
easier from underneath.

Subject: [Tigers] Speedo Cable Installation
Hey all -
I recently had a local shop replace my clutch, along with a few other repai=
rs/updates. On the drive home, I noticed the speedo wasn't working. I m=
entioned it to the shop and they said it works "when it wants to" but would=
be happy to take a look (meaning extra $). My overall impression of the =
shop's work is just okay, so I was going to troubleshoot what I could befor=
e bringing the car back for more of their time.
It's been about 20 years since I installed that cable and could use a refre=
sher. The installation at the gauge end is pretty straightforward, but as=
I recall the speedo gear end is more tricky. I seem to remember that the=
re here was an access port on the transmission tunnel underneath the carpet=
and cubby box (?). Or is it easiest to raise the car and access from und=
erneath? Some combination?
Thanks much!
- Graham Harlowe
