I'll be going through the same thing soon. I'm thinking that perhaps a
sealant over the paint may be one thing that's needed for the needles --
that stuff most definitely outgasses. That perhaps followed by a different
elastomer to seal the window to the body of the gauge.
I'll look into some of the outgassing properties of various sealants and
report back on any nifty things that might work better than "old
traditional" stuff. Could be as simple as a red silicone o-rings instead of
"glop". I do know that the "black crap" that the Brits used to seal the
original window faces was horrific -- melting and sticking to everything.
Stay tuned over the winter as I try and salvage the bits and pieces of my
car.
