Dan,
Erich's response is right. Tigers that have been repaired by the
front/rear clip replacement are still Tigers and can be successfully TACed.
The Tiger with the Alpine rear clip at the Crab Feast in September now bears
a TAC Sticker. TAC looks for evidence that the body shell was originally
manufactured as a Tiger, and if some of the evidence screams Alpine, then
you look for a reason why (i.e., a clip replacement). The STOA web site has
a section on Authentication, and all who are interested in the TAC program
should visit the site for more info.

Interesting you bring up the sighting of a Tiger with a Series V Alpine rear
clip. Is this still considered a true Tiger or is this no different than an
Alger? Could this be in an all new category? Chester Bailey had the front
clip from a Tiger in one of his barns complete with motor and all. Last time
I talked with Chester he told me he had taken one of the Series V Alpines he
had laying around and cut it in half; welded the Tiger front clip to the
Alpine rear clip and would sell me the car for $4500 in rough condition.
Said I could pass it off as the real McCoy if I didn't tell anyone. Bottom
line - it won't pass a TAC inspection I hope, and if it did it shouldn't. Of
course this is just my opinion. I guess if someone can't afford the real
Tiger it might be the next best thing as long as it is represented for what
it is. I've seen some Algers that were nicer than most of the Tigers I have
seen. So, Algers in my opinion are not bad things as long as they are
properly represented. No different than a hot rod. Norm may have placed the
photo of Chesters Tiger front clip on his web page. I know I sent most of
the photos I took of Chesters collection to Norm and I saw some of them on
his website. I can send you the photo if you are interested.

The VIN indicates that it started out as a S5 Alpine, and I'd bet that the
body tag would be SAL, not JAL, indicating that it was built by Sunbeam
instead of Jenson. A couple of months ago at the TE/AE Crab Feast, we saw a
Tiger body with an Alpine rear "clip" that had a vertical spare tire mount,
so the spare tire position alone would not be grounds for branding it an
Alger, just that one needed to look further for evidence of it's origin.
If I recall correctly, the Alpine 260 name was used for European Tigers, due
to another car company having the rights to the Tiger name.

Chris, I think he is far beyond just being cagey. He states, "Tiger""
is an original Alpine 260 converted to a 302 .... There was a Alpine
260, that was a Tiger, so either way he is selling a hoax.
Steves point is well taken, in that why would a owner of a real Tiger
change the spare and tools to a Alpine location.
With Norm's repository of the real Tiger numbers, and his statement re
that it is not, this is pretty convincing evidence, without seeing the
car.
This once again points that the TAC program, has real value, especially
to the prospective owner who does not know, and gets caught up in the
hype of buy the car, shoe phone and all.
