Robert,

Thanks for clearing up this mystery. You make a good point about the piston
areas. The Toyota calipers may have more area; at least the pads are quite a
bit bigger. The Tiger's front brake deficiency can be largely cured by using
high performance carbon composite pads. However, they still have a problem
with the high temperatures from repeated high speed braking that would
presumably be helped by using a caliper with larger pads. Regarding the
fronts locking up first, I heartily agree that this is a problem. For some
unknown reason, the Tiger's rear brake cylinders are smaller bore than the
early Alpine's. If you still have the original drum brakes in back, the
early front lockup problem can be helped by replacing the Tiger cylinders
with Alpine.
