Theo,
I believe you are right that the vinyl boot and/or B382xxxxxx serial number
are generally regarded as defining the MK 1A versus the Mk 1. I will blame
my misunderstanding on some imprecise language by Norm on page 4 of TBON.
"Although the MK I Tiger was actually in production for three years,
1964-1966, the 1966 cars are now commonly called MK IAs. This, however, was
never an official factory designation. It is thought that the term might
have come from someone inside the 'California Association of Tiger Owners .
. . and has stuck as a convenient method for breaking up the MK I production
by year and body style." If I had read on to page 5, I would have also read:
"The (built for 1966 model year) '65/'66 MK I Tiger carries a serial number
beginning with B382000001 and continues until B382002706." I had thought
that Norm was presenting a somewhat different definition of the MK 1A, which
is why I said "but is considered, at least by some, to correspond to the
start of 1966." Now, what do you want to bet someone out there is going to
tell us they have a B382xxxxxx serial number with a metal softop cover. ;-)
