I've always heard that synthetic oils and additives like teflon, moly etc.
shouldn't be used the first few hundred miles so that the rings can seat
themselves properly.
On the cam, I would imagine you want the lobes and lifters to gently wear
off any slight high spots and be properly matched across the whole lobe
before you start taking the revs up. At higher revs the forces are much
greater and if the lobes/lifters aren't worn in properly (i.e. match each
other well) you could have localized excessive pressure which could damage
the lobes.
I've always been told that when you start driving the car to take the revs
up high occasionally (when it is warm.) I think this is to prevent the top
ring ridge from being formed too low (and breaking the top ring when you do
rev high later. Not sure if this is that important on road cars but all my
rally mates say it's true.
