Chris,

I don't wonder at your wondering about us Chris, so here's something to
make you wonder even more. Now I don't claim to be any expert at engine
balancing, but it makes no sense whatsoever that all of the difference in
the weights of eight connecting rods could be compensated for by that silly
little "hatchet" piece sticking way out at the front end of the engine. I
kind of think the balancing would need to be rather evenly distributed
between each of the crank throws, plus the flywheel and harmonic damper at
each end, don't you?? If this wasn't the case, kind of makes you wonder why
they would bother with crank counterweights at all; just put all of the
balance weights at each end. And, as Steve asks rhetorically regarding the
HiPo damper, what about the flywheel at the other end. Where's the
corresponding little "hatchet" to balance that sucker?? What I think we
have here is just another arm chair racer trying to second guess what those
Ford engineers were thinking. So far I don't think you're any closer than
the rest of us. ;-)

Thinking about burying the hatchet in San Diego - but not yet,

Bob
