Tony, Steve, et Listers,
It's always dangerous, but fun to speculate on just what those crazy Ford
engineers were thinking with regard to various changes they made. For
example, the different firing order in the 351W engine, etc. As I mention
to Steve earlier in a private communication, I'm probably treading on thin
ice here too, but note that the cam counterbalance used in the HiPo 289s
turns at half the crankshaft rpm. Thus, this counterweight would appear to
have no direct relationship to the external balancing of the engine by the
harmonic damper. I suspect it is an attempt to reduce higher harmonics that
exist inherently in the V-8 design (only straight sixes and V-12s are
perfectly balanced designs).
Just another two cents worth. Any comments?
