First, I simply put my car into 4th gear and move it backward and forward
till the proper valve is open. It is easier if you pull the plugs to kill
compression. As far as the oil thing is concerned, it sure sounds like #4 is
burnt
and is sucking oil into the chamber to burn. Probably eventually a valve job,
but they will run while burning oil,if that is the only problem. Leakage is
a PITA but fairly typical if you can stand it.
You might be able to check the valve play in the guides while you are setting
the rockers. At least you could tell if one has a LOT of play, which could
be critical.
