I have dealt with people on trust and it has always worked out fine.
However, when I read about what sounds like an abuse of the trust we
usually share on the lists, I got pretty steamed. But we have heard only
one side of the story, and before we encourage Susie to take this public,
which could get ugly, maybe we should let the person know that they have an
opportunity to set this right with Susie, off-list, before we start
clamoring for his name so we can ostracize him.
Until I know otherwise, I'll attribute this to a lapse in judgement, and
hope that it can settled amongst the parties involved without having to
call out the mob. I would also hope that any regular list member would know
that questionable dealings might eventually result in public humiliation. I
wouldn't deal with somebody who wasn't a regular. "Good standing in the
community" is pretty much all we have to go on.
Somebody always has to absorb the cost of shipping if the goods aren't
satisfactory though, and this is an area where I have had to compromise.
