I replaced the ones on my Sprite soon after I got the car.
I replaced mine for free, Yup, read Free (a'la Frank Clarici).
I went to my local shoe repair shop, and asked for a scrap of leather
about 6" long, 1-1/2" wide and about 1/8" thick. I cut this to size,
oiled it, drilled the holes, and voila, a check strap. I should add
that the leather is considerably stronger than the original, it's never
broken since, it looks great, and it smells (a little bit) pretty good
inside the car.
