Another safe option is a dual coil speaker, but you don't often
see these in full range drivers.
This is how many systems run their single subwoofer. Two coils
on the speaker, independent but driving the same cone.
However, this works much better with woofers because low frequencies
are much much much more likely to be "in phase" between left and
right.
(for those who care, it's because differences between channels are
caused by time and therefore phase differences from stereo signals
hitting the mics (or artificial recreation of). This gives the
stereo "effect" because this is how your ears determine spatial
position in real life. The short waveforms of high frequencies
require less spatial distortion to be out of phase than the long
wavelengths of lower frequencies).
