As long as the flanges mate up, you're fine. The sliding spline is to allow
for various spacing between the engine/tranny assembly and differential. The
distance does vary a bit and the sliding splines allow for this. In other
applications, it allows for motion of the rear axle differential, or front
suspension motion in the case of a front wheel drive car.
If the CV joint is in good shape, go ahead and use it. Place it at either end,
ie, you can install the driveshaft backwards. It makes no difference.
