Mike I would support with a trolley jack. Then when you slide the 
gearbox back it will run on the jack. Also you want to avoid hanging the 
gearbox off the engine by the shaft anyway. Also a neat trick it to get 
a couple of 4" bolts with a short thread and cut the head off, make a 
slot for a screwdriver and screw these in at the top where the bolts go 
into the block. to act as sliders for the gearbox. Not only guides, but 
does help support the weight. I used 2 of these and putting the gearbox 
back myself this made things really easy.
