For the later-model Spits with the CV-joint propshafts, there was a
service bulletin recommending that the shaft be re-installed
with the joint in the back.

The reason for this was simply that it was difficult to slide
the bigger end of the shaft up the tunnel without getting stuck.

I doubt that it makes any difference which end is forward,
assuming the shaft is in balance, etc.
