Sometimes the moving parts can be partly seized up, and if you simply
try to wiggle them by hand, they will appear to be tight, but the
higher forces of acceleration, braking, etc., can cause them to
give, often with a ugly sound.
Once I had a strap-style driveshaft where the telescoping joint
(which is surrounded by the straps) was seized up. Every now
and then it made a horrible chattering sound, and I had no idea
that that joint was the cause. I assumed that something inside
my differential was disintegrating!
Tracking down funny noises has been one of the most interesting
aspect of owning a Spit. I am currently trying to deal with a
occasional chattering sound from the vicinity of one of the bonnet latches,
and an intermittent buzzing from something behind the dash.
