This weekend, I finally stopped putting off something that I have been
planning to do for some time now. I recovered the dash pad on Huxley
(the Red Mk1 Spit).
I went to a local fabric store and purchased a remnant of vinyl that
cost me less than 5 bucks. Then proceeded to the Home Depot for some
adhesive.
I spent about $20 bucks on the project and have enough material left
over to do another 10 or so.
But the results were fantastic!
I discovered that it is easiest to glue the fabric to the hidden section
of the pad first and install it back on the car. This will hold it in
place while you stretch and glue the fabric to the exposed surface.
Then you can quickly install the vent registers and ashtray and finally
the windshield frame that will hold everything in place while the glue
thoroughly sets up.
The whole thing took about 4 hours and hopefully will never have to be
repeated.
Cheers,
Joe
P.S. You guys who have MkIV and 1500 Spits won't have the advantage of
having a removable windshield frame to help hold everything in place.
But then you guys can buy off the shelf covers for your cars!
