Jeff, that is the 'neutral indicator switch for
the seat belt warning lights... (one of many variations
over the years)
the first photo at
http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/73gt6br_odharness.htm
shows the two switches on their bracket attached to the harness
left front switch= o/d right front=neutral
rear, under shift extension=reverse
The interlock and manual switches, 'in series' simply
ground the one side of the relay to turn it on. The 'click' on the dash
when the relay kicks in, if the points are set right in the solenoid
the high current (0,44ohm) pull-in coil gets power through the
now closed relay contacts. As the solenoid pulls in, the points
connect/disconnect the pull in coil winding and energize the
'hold' coil (2-5 ohms) If you open the interlock or gear switch
the relay should loose power, the contacts should open (firewall click)
and the o/d solenoid should drop out (click)
When the solenoid first energizes, it'll pull 12 amps DC. Then the points
change and the pulls only 2-4 amps to hold it in gear.
