Peter,
Fair enough, in your case with stop-start city driving and a hot summer, the
electric fans seems entirely justified! Living in rural Scotland, where it
is rarely warm and there are no traffic lights, I tend to get a different
perspective...
I would probably suggest starting off just with the electic fan, and seeing
how you go with that. The big problem with the mechanical fan is that it
only works well when you don't need it - when the engine is running fast as
you drive rapidly along the road, and there is plenty of wind through the
radiator anyway. When you really do need it, idling with the car
stationary, the fan is barely moving - useless! The electic fan completely
solves this problem, only working when it is really needed, and working well
at those moments.
So hopefully that alone will solve your problem; you can always add the
wider radiator at a later date, if you need to. A Kenlowe fan is about 2/3
price of a 22" radiator (from Rimmers, anyway), and you may be able to get
cheaper ones that that, plus I'd expect the fan to be a better solution
anyway.
Richard (looking out at the snow, overheating not really an issue right
now!!)
