Actually on the later single rail gearboxes, the shift lever can
be easily removed by pressing down and turning the locking collar
at the base of the lever and then the lever will pull straight up
and out. Best to do this while in neutral to make putting it back
in easier. It's not strictly necessary to remove the lever, but
it certainly makes pulling out the cardboard tunnel cover much less
difficult. You do have to remember to to redo the collar thingy after
replacing the gearbox cover but before fastening it back on. It's a
little fiddly reaching around under it, but really not that difficult.
