Long ago, I was helping a friend adjust the valves on his Chevy 350, and we did 
it hot while the engine was running.  He had some caps that fit over the rods 
that kept the oil from spurting onto the driveway.

And as for the guy who claims his MGB mechanic adjusts the tappets while the
engine's running, all I can say is look out for the scalding motor oil!
