Hot.  This is the condition your engine operates under, and where the
adjustment is actually critical.  

It's also the hardest to do because everything is too hot to touch
without going "ouch", and it cools down rather quickly, leading to false
readings and overly tight valves because you set it to the hot lash when
it was only warm, and not when it's back running at hot temperatures,
the lash becomes too tight, the valves don't seat well, overheat, and
burn.
