I think it is easier to get at the switches by loosening the clamp
on the telescoping steering shaft and sliding the wheel and the
upper half-shaft up a few inches.

I will admit that it is difficult to replace the steering wheel with a 
different one
without removing the old one first :-)

But the message I was trying to convey to new Spit owners and novice mechanics
is that if they automatically assume that they need to remove the wheel to do 
something,
they should think twice, and consider the effort involved (e.g. buying that big 
socket)
and what alternative techniques might be more appropriate.

If any of you ever have to repair the steering column of a modern car with air 
bags, I pity you.
The Spit's is trivial in comparison...
