John,

If you did NOT have any broken spring piece (foreign metal matter)enter the 
cylinder via the valves, then you'll be fine.  Once apart, you may very well 
note some slight 'ding' marks in the carbon atop the piston, assuming that your 
valve was actually tapping it, as you've suggested.  They shouldn't be of any 
concern, as can be rubbed/buffed off (or simply left as they are).

Just my opinion, but go with the double springs if you can.  I've lost push 
rods before because of the single springs.  Next rebuild, I'm going double 
springs to prevent this.

And to the 'other' John... thanks for the idea!  I've never even considered 
removing the head with the manifold attached (doh!)
