Greg, if it is original like mine (also a '76 federal with the higher
compression etc.) it should be the collapsible spacer. But sorry I don't
know how to tell the difference off the top of my head. You don't need
to take the diff apart to replace the seals. I did my pinion seal a year
or so ago on the car (drop the prop shaft, mark the nut and count the
turns method) and also just did the other two seals and bearings at the
sides in the car (had a friend with a hydraulic press help get the
bearings off and on the shafts).
