Fred,

I've bought some things from other list members who know me from the list,
but not personally.  Some have requested payment first; then they'll send
the item when the check arrives.  Another list member said that this is what
he would have to do because he was "screwed" by another list member who was
sent the goods, but the money never arrived.

The way I look at it, if I am the buyer, I am obliged to make sure the
seller gets paid.  If he requests that the check clear first, that's OK with
me.  Even if he is familiar with me from the list, I wouldn't expect to be
treated differently.  I wouldn't take it as questioning your honesty or
integrety.  The only exception might be if the guy knew me personally from
my local Triumph club or a guy who drops by on the weekend to work on our
cars together.

I wouldn't use the term "off base", but you might want to rethink this
unfortunate episode.
Thanks for all the help you've given me in the past.  I'd like to get
together this weekend at my garage to work on our cars, but alas, I don't
even know what you look like or where you live.
Such are the limitations of "online" friendships.
