Jon, I did the same to the dash and have never glued it on. The vents 
come off easily once you work out that the posts for the tonneau cover 
at the end are in fact bolts, and the nuts and washers are below. 
Dropping the centre panel gives some access especially to the passenger 
side, but expect to curse a few times when you do the ones behind the 
instruments. Also don't forget to remove the bezel holding in the 
ashtray. That and the vent hold the overlay nicely in place. A friend 
has an MGB and the overlay on that is nothing like as good as the 
Spitfire one which pretty well make it look as new.  You may want to 
clean and paint the vent covers and ashtray while they are off.
