Although it's a bit late in the season for it, I'd suggest putting up
with your tattered dash top for one more summer, and disassembling the
dash in the fall.
I took my dash top pad to a local interior specialist, along with the
pads lining the bottom edge, and had everthing re-vinyled (if that's a
word). While out, the demister vent trim pieces (1 nut underneath
each end) and the ashtray went to Fred Thomas for a sandblast and
powder coat.
It looks beeyootiful now, with the new Prestige Autowood veneer.
'Course, the rest of the car looks like crap, but all I'll see while
driving is the dash and the front wing humps... (unless I look up, and
then I'll see the headliner is missing).
So my advice is, can the overlay hack and do it MY way. ;-)
