The Spitfire uses the same universal joint for the drive shaft as well as 
the half shafts from the differential to the wheels themselves.  The 
clicking is a typical indicator of a U-joint failing.  Even if it's new, it 
could have been installed incorrectly and led to premature wear.  While 
I've never tried replacing them while on the car, they aren't bad at all to 
replace on the workbench with a vise.
