Greg,
I know JUST how you feel - I had a U-joint disintegrate on me at 70mph on a
busy dual carriageway, and again was lucky to fight the car to the verge
with no serious incident.
You just have to move forward. You fix the damage, you get back in and you
drive. Your confidence is very shaky at first, but you keep driving and the
confidence will return. Daffy was my only car too (at that time - and I've
only been forced to buy another (near-scrap shopping trolley) due to the
impending increase in the size of my family), so I know what you mean about
not being able to afford 2 cars and worrying that a Spit is not appropriate
as an only car. Keep her well maintained, keep an eye out for the early
warning signs and fix problems before they get bad, and you will avoid most
problems.
I am truly glad that you and your car survived this incident with no serious
damage. I hope you and your Spitfire will stay together and get back to
enjoying each others company.
Richard and Daffy
