The trade namy "Glyptal" rings a bell (check the spelling though). I've only 
seen this in red, but it's specifically for the inside of engines. "Our" cars 
were normally left unpainted inside the block, however some British cars of the 
1950's were painted - take a look at the inside of a Rover engine of this era - 
wonderfully finished.
