Im not too mechanical so I can narrow it down to specific noises, but basically
the closest thing I can tell you is that it now sounds like it has a sports
exhaust - which it doesnt.

I managed to work out how to use the choke properly this morning. On the carbs
before - which were of the older type - I just pulled it all the way out and it
worked all the time. But I think of got choke operation figured now.....
although
Ill investigate the MGB choke idea from Richard when I have time.

Nope, the engine oil. It may just be coincidence. Im not sure.
Regarding Emiel's comment on timing - I have no concept of timing yet - apart
from
the obvious :( I'll read up on it...... is there an easy way to check?
