As for the steering slop, a prime culprit is often the flexible 'knuckle'
joint at the bottom end of the steering column, just as it enters the rack.
I replaced mine and it made an immediate noticeable improvement, since the
slack was visible when the steering wheel was wobbled. These joints are
known for wearing out - I have heard a suggestion to replace with a proper
UJ as used on a Triumph 2000, but I just went with a brand new standard
knuckle joint.
