The bore of the cylinder gets all pitted.  I have three in this condition.  
Repair seems to be impractical.

Yes! This is a good idea.  But leave the internal piston in place
to preserve the dual-circuit characteristic.  About 10 years ago,
I simply plugged mine with epoxy, and it hasn't leaked a drop since.
Even if the epoxy were to fail, it couldn't leak any worse
then it used to, since the internal piston is really what
resists the fluid pressure.  Certainly a real plug would
be a bit more elegant than epoxy, but I have no idea
where to find one, either.
