Paint thinner, oil and grease remover, etching primer, high build primer,
sealer, urethane base coat and clear coat cost about $550.00, $40.00 or so
to turn my garage into a spraybooth (included homemade filtration system)
and more than I want to think about over the past two years to replace the
rear valance, both rear quarters, floors, sills, and bonnet. The guy that
hit me insurance paid me over $2200.00 and let me fix the car myself so that
offset most of the cost. I can't even begin to add up all the man hours over
two years, but it took about three weeks of weekends and nights to do the
final prep - this included stripping the whole car to bare metal and filling
some door dings, most of the car was new and did not need much work. The
actual painting took two full days, a lot longer than I thought it would.
One day to do the body and doors and the second to do the bonnet, trunk and
valance. I got a few runs with the clear coat and a few small bugs that
took a few hours to remove the next day. It was not hard to do just took a
lot of time. I read a lot of books, and got all the info from the internet I
could. Then I practiced using the spray gun on the old bonnet with some
cheap paint. My best advice is get more paint than you think you will need,
get more lighting than you think is necessary and have a big garage to paint
in. Go to http://www.autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/config.pl , its a paint and
bodywork BBS. Good place to get advice from other painters.
