I've also heard that ethoxide (sodium hydroxide in
ethanol) or Methylene Chloride (available as
"Plastisolve" thru EMS) will eventually eat through
cured epoxy, if you let it soak in it for a good deal
of time. I'm not a chemist but the Methylene chloride
may not be too gentle on the magnet either.
Might be cheaper to find another one at a swap meet.
Larry Elswick at one point had a parts GT6, maybe he's
got a gas cap you can have.
