The dashpot oil only keeps the pistons from flying up
into the dashpot cover when you stomp on the gas
pedal. Most people drive so mild as the loss of damper
oil is rarely even noticed except a small bit of
stumble that they may get from accelerationg from a
dead stop.
If it's consistant through the power range, I'd be
wondering if you didn't reverse a plug wire or
something. Check to make sure you're getting spark on
all plugs. It's possible you may have fouled one or
one of your wires has gone bad.
Without any other symptoms or diagnosis done (check
compression, check for fuel pressure, strobe the
timing). I really don't know what else to suggest at
this time.

I checked spark plugs already - biscuity brown as they should be, so I guess
the mixture is not far off, at least most of the time.
The problem only occurs occasionally, 90% of the time she runs fine, so I
doubt it is broken or mis-connected HT leads. Timing was strobed recently,
and adjusted to 10deg BTDC as it should be for my spec car. When the
problem does occur, I get this on/off lurching if I accelerate (even
slightly) throughout the rev range.
Thanks for the thoughts, there seems to be a consensus that this suggests
lean running, but why does it only crop up after I've been sitting in
stationary traffic, or driving at a constant motorway speed for a while?
That's what I've still got to figure out...
