I tend to turn the engine over at least 8 to 10 rotations (each rotation
marked by an individual "rurr") before pulling out the choke for my car to
start. I figure, that way the oil gets a chance to circulate first.

I wouldn't use the starting fluid right away. Let it turn over a bit first.

Does the long starting process happen only after sitting for a while? A
buddy of mine on the midget list had a similar issue only after the car sat
for a week or more. We changed all the flex fuel lines from the tank to the
carb and that seems to have solved the problem.

I would definitely think fuel first...

greetings...a question re hard starting and card setting
questions. my 79 spit hase become reluctant to starting
on its own lately. when i activate the choke, i can smell
gas after a few atarting attempts, indicating floding, and
the choke finctioning (i think?)....i stopped by the auto
store in town, and picked up a can of starting spray...it
works like a charm, starting the car w/in the first few seconds
of turning the motor over....without this spray, the motor
turns, and turns....running down the battery, and gettin the
starter motor "hot and bothered"...so, the two questions
are:

1) i think i heard using the starter spary, is hard on the valves
or other parts of the motor...opinions?

2) as i consider tinkering around w/the carb settings...where should
i start?...float level? mixture?....just re build the card and
"start over"?..

thanx for replys...
