Well, if you are like me and can't stay out of
used-book shops, you end up with all three anyway.
Or four. Or five.
I've even picked up a few manuals that were
apparently put out as "one off" jobs by
car clubs. My favorite has a brown cover with
a Herald pictured and was printed for
the "Euro Car Club" of Manchester, UK. It
covers Heralds and Spits up to 1973. Paid $5 US
for it at a local shop.
As for my choice for the novice, I suppose
I'd have to say Haynes. It's written in a
conversational tone and covers the jobs that
a shade-tree mechanic is liable to undertake.
I don't think your average owner, with the
average home shop, is going to rebuild a trans.
For more complex jobs, the factory or the
Bentley manual are required. I've even loaned
my Bentley to the local transmission guy
who needed the specs to fix my trans.
