Not being an expert on this, but last time it came up, it was decided that
the M was for the latch makers name.

Right Roger,
    I remember that answer also on this list and took it as truth at the
time.  So perhaps it is just one of those conundrums that remains open
ended. (Careful of the spelling there!)
