Jeff that is the old pinion seal. They were made of metal with felt? packed
into them. New ones are quite different. You will destroy it getting it
out, don't fear. I recommend probably 4 to 6 1/4 sheet metal screws tapped
into it (if you can do this through another piece of metal or wood great!
That way you can bang on them to get it out. Last one I did I tapped 4
screws into the seal wrapped rope around them and attached them to my
come-a-long applied a whole lot of tension and then tapped at the screws
with a hammer. Very effective (don't know if I would recommend this though)
That seal shot out like a bullet. I would not waste time with the gear
puller as from my experience it will only bend the lip of the seal and not
move it.
best of luck
Patrick

Thanks Patrick.
I had to use a two prong hub or gear puller. Not sure what it is, but I
bought it for six bucks at a local parts place and it worked great. The
pinion shaft had the requisite indentation at the end to acomodate the
pointed end of the stud on the puller, so it seems that this operation was
not unusual in any sense. I tried everything I knew prior to that. Even
tried using a pry bar on the ears of the flange and it was stuck.
Now that I've got the flange off, I'm befuddled by what I see. It appears
to be some sort of a flat 3/8ths inch metal ring that's flush with the
differential mount and covers most of the pinion seal underneath it. I see
no mention of this part at all in the catalogs. Maybe older pinion seals
were constructed differently than their replacements? In any case, I'm not
certain how to procede. I'm assuming that this flat, giant "washer" or
whatever it is needs to come out, but I'm not sure how to pull it out.
Maybe I can reverse the jaws of the gear puller I just used and yank it out
that way. I'm also unclear as to whether I need to put this thing BACK
after I get the new seal in, but I'm assuming YES. Strange that the parts
catalogs don't cover this piece.
Take care and thanks.
Jeff
