Chances are when this was written, electronic ignitions were in there
infancy so to speak, and weren't nearly as reliable as rugged as they are
today. Vibration and heat, the two main enemy of electronics are very
prevalent in the racing environment. Good old points could be counted on
to last many a race without any problems -
Today, much more reliable and rugged electronic ignitions are available,
many with much improved performance potential over point type ignitions,
and unless you want to keep the vehicle totally stock, then there is no
real reason NOT to convert to electronic ignition -

distributor with an earlier one to get a different (better) advance curve,
and recommends going with points over electronic ignition. I understand
the curve bit, but not the points.
