Odd. I don't see the correlation between slow burning and better fuel economy. Slow burning means the piston is pushed down slower, resulting in less power and usually less MPG's. Your engine may require the higher octane because of overly advanced timing or carbon build-up that is raising the compression ratio. Besides the 20 cents or more per gallon of high octane fuel costs more than you are saving with higher MPG.
