I must be lucky, because I get my aviation fuel for free. I have a friend
that is in the business of rebuilding wrecked, or otherwise damaged aircraft,
and when they drain the tanks on these aircraft, FAA regulations prohibit
reusing the fuel that was drained out. My friend usually has several hundred
gallons of 100 LL (low lead) sitting around in 55 gallon drums, and he gives
me as much as I need. I have run this fuel in my Harley (10:1 compression),
and I filled up the tank on the Spitfire as well, and this stuff is better
than any of the tank additives (fuel injector & carb cleaners) on the market.
My Harley cleaned up (rough idle) in just a couple of minutes, as did the
Spitfire. The best part is that aviation fuel still has some lead in it.
Regular pump gas has all kinds of additives, and other contaminates in it,
that aviation fuel doesn't. Also, I don't know of any airport that still has
140 octane fuel though, as 100 LL is pretty much the norm anymore, but It
could still be available in some areas. My two cents.
