A Subaru Boxer motor like an EA82 would NEVER fit in a spitfire without
extensive modifications to the front suspension. The engine is not that
long but is WIDE simply because the cylinders stick out 180 degrees from
each other. It might be possible to install it in sideways..... but what
use is that?
Several other reasons not to use the engine:
1) notorious for leaking oil.
2) Expensive parts.
3) Sucks to work on. (personal experience here)
I'm sure other people have different opinions, this is just mine.

I don't know first hand, but I have heard that the parts for that Suburu
engine are very expensive. A friend in Washington was
elaborating on that a while back!

P.S. I was once thinking of using the GM quad 4 engine. Of course it would
have to be modified to mount onto a regular in-line
transmission, since it was designed to sid sideways. But it would generate
quite a punch in the light Spit body!
