I looked at a lot of british cars before deciding to buy the Spitfire, and
even then, I looked at and drove each of the models of spitfire. I looked
and bought in Los Angeles, so there were plenty of examples of almost every
type around. Among the rarest of spitfires, at least of those that I had
ever seen, were the mkI and mkIIs.
The relative scarcity of these cars drew me somewhat, and as far as
differentiating between the round tail vs. mkIV and 1500, I just like the
round-tail design better. IMHO, it is more of a classic design. I also
like the chrome bumpers, especially the lower ones on the mkI and mkII, so
you can see the grille.
The one thing about the mkIII, though, that I sometimes wish I had is the
convertible top. The mkI and mkII tops are something of a pain to put up
and take down, since they are totally removable. I also sometimes think a
reversing light would be good.
But I still like the lower bumpers of the mkII - so weigh it all up, and
I'll stick with the car I've got.
